BOOK DASH- 5 MILLION BOOKS LATER 👏👏👏


" EVERY CHILD SHOULD OWN A  HUNDRED BOOKS BY  THE AGE OF FIVE "

This is the vision of non-profit organization, BookDash.
As of August 2025, BookDash has managed to distribute 5 Million Books.

In 2021,of BookDash achieved its milestone of 2 Million books.

Hard work and determination, from the BookDash team, has brought 34 titles, translated into South Africa's 11 official languages, including the South African Sign Language, to the lives of many children and their families.




BookDash has an open-license, which has enabled more than 100 organisations, from dozens of countries, across the African continent, and around the world, to adapt, remix, publish and print BookDash published titles.




Alongside the more than 400 volunteers, that have participated in the past 24 BookDash book creator events, BookDash has also partnered with many organisations, such as, UNICEF, the South African Department of Basic Education, and Stellenbosch University's curriculum project, Handlab.





Thembi Shangase, the executive director of BookDash, stated,
“We can’t fix the challenges, we face as a country, if children still don’t have access to books. 
Before we can expect children to read for meaning, we need to start building children’s love of reading, and their identity, as readers – and we can only do that, if we get enjoyable, relatable storybooks, into every child’s hands.

Ms Shangase added that, more investment is needed, from all corners of society. And that, BookDash is a scalable, high-reach and high-impact, social investment.

"We’ve honed the systems to get quality, engaging and
affordable African storybooks, into even the most rural communities – so any contribution, translates straight into more books in children’s hands.
Creating a world where literacy, reading and access to books, are not a luxury but accessible for everyone, anywhere, takes all of society. Together, we can achieve this, for this country and ultimately the continent.”

Located within Bo-Kaap, amongst the cultural heart of the Cape Malay community, the DAC on DORP Gallery, has been offering Artists, Space to work and live since 2023. The Gallery's mission, is to give back to the Community, via Artist Residency, Art Fairs, Outreach Programs, Community and School Tours, Workshops, and Advocacy Events that engage the broader Community.
