CGIAR GENDER IN FOOD, LAND, AND WATER SYSTEMS CONFERENCE 2025
'ACCELERATING EQUALITY IN FOOD, LAND, AND WATER SYSTEMS
DRIVING SOLUTIONS THROUGH EVIDENCE AND LEARNING'
For three days, from 7th to 9th October 2025, at Century City Conference Centre, in Cape Town, South Africa,
the biennial CGIAR ( formally, Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research)
GENDER (Generating Evidence and New Directions for Equitable Results)
Conference 2025 was held.
The message, that underpinned the CGIAR Gender 2025 Conference, of collaborative dialogue, networking and evidence-sharing of personal, hands-on experience and professional fact-finding missions, presented to researchers, scientists, policymakers, development practioners, representatives of local communities, and farming organizations, was clear:
'Urgent action is needed, to break barriers, of gender inequality in the agriculturaral food, land and water systems.'
Presenters who spoke at the conference, included:
- Nicoline de Haan, Director for Gender Equality and Inclusion at CGIAR,
- Dr. Mark Smith, Director General at IWMI,
- Dr. Mogale Sebopetsa, HoD at the Western Cape Department of Agriculture,
- H.E. Ambassador J Nosipho Nausca-Jean Jezile, CFS chair and ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to the United Nations Agencies in Rome,
- Surita Sandosham, President and CEO at Heifer International,
- Dr. Michael O’Sullivan, senior economist and head of the World Bank's Africa Gender Innovation Lab,
- Dr. Medrine Muloza Banda, principal secretary for Technical Services at the Ministry of Agriculture in Malawi,
- Lynn Schneider, senior program officer for Women’s Empowerment in Agricultural Development at the Gates Foundation and,
- Dr. Lauren M. Phillips, deputy director for Rural Transformation and Gender Equality Division of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization.
Mathilda Amollo was named the Grand Prize Winner of the #WAYA2025 awards for her work with GreatLakes Feeds Ltd.

Dr. Mercy Diebiru-Ojo (a scientist with IITA-CGIAR) was named one of the laureates for the Africa Food Prize 2025 for her work on cassava and yam seed systems.
CGIAR is dedicated to transforming food, land, and water systems amid a world in crisis. Aiming is to reduce poverty, enhance food and nutrition security, and improve natural resources and ecosystem services.
